Peritoneal Metastasis of Cholangiocarcinoma Treated with Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, Colombia

Abstract: Cholangiocarcinoma is a low-frequency neoplasm of onset with a poor prognosis. Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the most frequent site of metastasis with a standard palliative chemotherapy treatment. In the present article, we describe the case of a 35-year-old woman with peritoneal carcinomatosis secondary to an intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma who was treated with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) as a nonstandard therapeutic method. The patient has disease-free sur… Show more

“…More than 75,000 patients are diagnosed with PM every year (Table 1). 1‐11 PM is the primary pattern of metastasis for appendix, ovary, and peritoneal mesothelioma primary tumors. The majority of patients with gastrointestinal tumors are at modest risk for PM (Table 1), whereas PM is much less common in patients with soft tissue sarcoma, breast cancer, skin cancer, and primary tumors of the lung.…”

“…Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has become over years an effective strategy for the treatment of cancers with PM, initially in the treatment of primitive peritoneal tumors [mesothelioma ( 7 ) and pseudomyxoma peritonei ( 8 )], later on, the advanced stages of ovarian cancer ( 9 ), and more recently has been applied in selected center even for the treatment of gastrointestinal tumor with PM ( 10 , 11 ). The application of CRS and HIPEC to CCA with PM ( 12 , 13 ) has been described in a few cases with better results compared to SC in terms of overall survival.…”
