Perkinsus marinus in Crassostrea gigas in the Gulf of California

Abstract: To determine the agent responsible for the massive mortalities of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in northwest Mexico, 30 oysters were sampled after a severe mortality event in 2006 along the Sonoran coast. Histological analyses revealed the presence of a protozoan and Ray's fluid thioglycollate medium (RFTM) assays showed the presence of Perkinsus sp., identified as P. marinus from the DNA sequence of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene complex. PCR analyses for Marteil… Show more

“…On other hand, the higher mortality values for all groups were observed in the same time period. It is well documented that summer mortality of Pacific oyster are associated to water temperature exceeding 20°C (Costil et al, 2005;Gagnaire et al, 2006) that in many cases, promote favorable conditions for pathogens as well (Enríquez-Espinoza et al, 2010). Therefore, it is possible assume that BW and survival of diploid and triploid oyster were strongly affected for the high water temperature during the first five cultivation months (summer).…”

“…Enríquez-Espinoza et al [31] in Gulf of California estimated prevalence of 100% in Crassostrea gigas through RTFM assays. The estimated prevalence by Cáceres-Martínez et al [32] varied from 1 to 6% in Crassostrea corteziensis on the Pacific coast of Mexico.…”

“…Mollusc species have different responses to a pathogenic protozoan infection, and environmental factors such as temperature and salinity are involved in the infective process [31,35]. Perkinsosis is an illness associated with warm waters which is a characteristic of the northeastern region of Brazil.…”
