Permanent Downhole Gauges (PDGs) are important accessories to run in with the completions of a well and are particularly crucial in offshore locations and deviated wells where intervention is uneconomical and risky. This paper performs a comparative analysis of the different technologies used in the design of PDGs. It outlines specific use and advantages of each of the sensor types used in PDGs. From the comparative analysis, optical sensors are the most versatile in terms of ability to measure a broad range of parameters and can survive harsh conditions of pressure and temperature. They are relatively expensive. Piezoelectric sensors such as Quartz or Sapphire crystals are also very robust but are limited to a range of temperatures and pressures. Silicon-on-insulator sensors are most useful in wells with artificial lift systems (ESP or Gas lift) as they can determine the efficiency of the artificial lift system. They are also limited by operational temperatures and pressures. Capillary tube pressure gauges are rugged and well suited for extreme conditions of temperature and pressure but cannot measure a wide range of parameters. Two quick-look flowcharts for selection of PDGs were developed and presented in this work as helpful output. One is based on well properties while the other is based on field properties. Economic implications are considered in both. A quick cross-reference of the two flowcharts can help investors in their selection of a PDG.

Permanent surface and downhole measurement technologies have advanced considerably in terms of availability, reliability, performance and costs, and are increasingly deployed for real-time monitoring of wells and equipment. Permanent downhole sensors are used to measure pressure, temperature, flow rates, fluid phases and to reflect operating conditions in wellbores. Surface sensor systems provide real-time measurements of pressure, temperature, fluid phases and flow rates that need to be integrated for analysis. The resulting large volume of data has created challenges in data management, evaluation and analysis. It is important that production analysts have access to workflows and tools that provide real-time efficient and effective visualization and analysis. The optimal approach is to perform the visualization and analysis of data in real time, or near real time, to provide analysts with actionable information for timely and accurate decision making. Permanent downhole gauges are used for monitoring reservoir drainage, injection efficiency, well-completion hardware performance, and downhole pump performance. Some of the resulting benefits include reduced operational costs, improved safety, and properly monitored well integrity. Several onshore and offshore case studies are discussed to demonstrate application of real-time measurements coupled with visualization and analysis techniques to also achieve improved artificial lift performance, reduced operating costs, and manage production. The value of the information obtained from downhole permanent gauges and surface measurements are justified as evidenced by the growing number of operators relying on real-time permanent gauges. This paper reviews technologies that are used to monitor and manage equipment and production in oil and gas wells. It explains that the realized value of permanent monitoring depends on an efficient workflow for collection, evaluation, and analysis.

Currently, ultradeepwater single-trip multizone completions are commonly run (Techentien et al 2016). Looking forward, improvement and progress can be achieved by using run history, lessons learned, and best practices. In the Lower Tertiary of the Gulf of Mexico, multizone completions in which differential pressure ratings of 15,000 psi are necessary, all operational stages should be considered, including stimulation treatments and production depletion. To date, little information is published about specific downhole component design methods or standard qualification processes required by operators and/or service companies. The objective of this paper is to help educate the industry by presenting the approach of one service company to address the 15,000 psi Lower Tertiary challenge. This paper discusses the innovative qualification processes of all subsystems, including the intelligent upper completion, interfacing intermediate completion, and the sandface lower completion. The proven success of the industry-standard 10,000-psi generation IV (Clarkson et al. 2008) multizone frac-pack system (Grigsby et al. 2016) provides an installation and operating standard that is used as a basis for a 15,000-psi pressure-rated multizone system. Operators were interviewed, internal discussions with all stakeholders were conducted, and thorough reviews of current and future regulatory standards were completed to develop this methodology. This paper presents the results of these discussions and reviews the downhole components using a detailed qualification process. It also discusses the test procedures for full system validation to satisfy operator and regulatory requirements. The result is a reliable 15,000-psi differential, single-trip multizone system that incorporates an intelligent completion string for interventionless zonal isolation, control, and monitoring over the life of the well.
