Perpetuating Wage Inequality: Evidence from Salary History Bans

Abstract: Pay gaps for women and minorities have persisted after accounting for observable differences. Why? If employers can access applicants’ salary histories while bargaining over wages, they can take advantage of past inequities, perpetuating inequality.
