Internet Plagiarism among Form Four Chemistry Students of a Selected Malaysian Secondary School: Exploring Its Prevalence, Correlates and Gender Differences

This case study was conducted to investigate the extent and prevalence of Internet plagiarism among a group of upper secondary students taking Chemistry as an elective subject at a selected public school in Kuala Lumpur. Eighty-seven (N=87) Form Four Chemistry students were required to write a two-page essay on acid rain as part of the School-Based Assessment exercise. The essays were examined in a quantified document analysis to record the occurrences and prevalence of plagiarism from Internet sources. Researcher-coded scores and Turnitin similarity indexes were used as the measures of Internet plagiarism. The results show that Internet plagiarism in this student body was widespread (99%) as almost everyone plagiarized, except one female student. The amount of information copied was extremely high at an average of 90% for Turnitin similarity indexes and 91.3% for researcher-coded scores. Gender wise, both boys and girls plagiarized at about the same extent, and the slight difference between them did not account for any statistical significance. Most were involved in high-scale plagiarism, and appeared to have lifted their essays completely off the Internet. However, the study could not completely ascertain whether students' lack of ability in English and Chemistry was the actual reason for their plagiarism act as measures of the two subjects turned out to be weak correlates of plagiarism. Based on the findings, the study recommends that students be explicitly taught the proper skills of writing and educated about the nature and implications of Internet plagiarism.

This article discusses a case study on the issue of apostasy among Malaysian students studying abroad. This article explains how the student's life traveled until his apostasy. The objective of this study is to explore the journey of how apostates occur among students who are abroad. The methodology of this study uses a qualitative approach that is to use case studies. The use of Snowball Sampling was used in this study focusing on a respondent who is a student who is abroad who has characteristics related to apostasy issues. The chosen respondent was a male student studying at a University in the United States. Analysis of the data obtained as a result of the respondents showed that there is a cultural shock to students, there is no right place of dependence when abroad, influenced by non-Muslim partners and lack of knowledge related to aqidah. These factors can be used to help preachers formulate effective strategies and approaches to help this special population either at the level protection, prevention or rehabilitation.

The purpose of this preliminary review is to evaluate the effectiveness of the research instrument in identifying the level of academic and social integrity among the Muslim IPTA students in Malaysia. The quantitative study was conducted by using digital questionnaires. The study instruments were adapted from the studies of Anis Yusal (2017), Arieff Salleh Rosman et al, (2008), Nur Hafizah Yusoff (2019), Norhasilah Mat Nor (2012) and Nor Wahida (2018). Data were collected from 30 university students from various disciplines. The analysis was done by using software of IBM Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) version 26. The value for the Alpha Cronbach is 0.756. The analysis of data on demographic of the respondents and integrity were done using the descriptive and frequency test. For integrity, the study showed that majority of the students understand the concept of integrity. However, most of them had committed some academic integrity misconduct. As for social integrity, some agreed to several social values which are against the noble values in integrity. This contrasting finding is a concern and need to be addressed accordingly by virtue of deeper understanding on Islam as a way of life and becoming a highly integrity person. In the perspective of Islam, integrity is the value in oneself which is in line with the nature of trust, honesty, faith, strong belief, strict adherence to Islamic rules and noble manners.
