Persistent Left Ventricular Dysfunction in a Teenager with Yellow Phosphorous Poisoning

Abstract: Yellow phosphorous is a chemical compound used widely as a rodenticide and in fireworks. Due to its easy availability in India, consumption with suicidal intention is common. Liver is the organ most commonly involved. Though cardio-toxicity manifesting as hypotension, tachycardia, arrhythmias and transient electrocardiogram changes is well known, a persistent left ventricular dysfunction is yet to be reported. We report a case of persistent left ventricular dysfunction as a long term sequelae in a teenager wit… Show more

“…Since this is an increasingly prevalent public health issue, steps should be taken to create and monitor a database containing all reported yellow phosphorus poisoning. 20,21 Some recommended measures are secure storage by the manufacturing industry, restricted accessibility and strict monitoring of stocks. 21 Widespread public awareness about the potential lethality, training of primary healthcare physicians regarding the delayed onset toxidrome, steps to ensure vigilant monitoring and reporting are essential to curb phosphorus poisoning.…”

“…Varying mortality rates have been reported ranging from 25% to 77% in various rodenticide poisoning studies available [11,12].Out of 13 patients with ST depression with t-wave inversion 10 patients expired, three out of eight patients with QT prolongation expired, one patient atrial fibrillation expired and no mortality was observed in sinus bradycardia group. Mortality of 23% in our study is comparable to other previous studies.…”
