“…In horses, diverticula are an occasional cause of oesophageal dysfunction that usually occur in the cervical portion of the oesophagus (Aanes 1976;Hackett et al 1978;Frauenfelder and Adams 1982;Vrins et al 1983;MacDonald et al 1987;Craig et al 1989;Harrison and Cartee 1990;Ford et al 1991) and rarely, in the thoracic portion (van Wuijckhuise-Sjouke 1983;Ford et al 1991). Swain et al (2004) reported a unique case of a diverticulum in the distal intra-abdominal oesophagus. With rare exceptions (van Wuijckhuise-Sjouke 1983), oesophageal diverticula in horses have been associated with chronic intermittent obstruction and, if localised in the cervical portion, with a neck swelling that increases in size after eating (Aanes 1976;Hackett et al 1978;Frauenfelder and Adams 1982;MacDonald et al 1987;Craig et al 1989;Harrison and Cartee 1990;Murray and Gaughan 1993).…”

“…Contrast radiography has been described as an aid in diagnosing diverticula, strictures, mega-esophagus or motility disorders. In the literature, limited information is available on the normal equine esophagogram and different techniques have been used (Butler et al, 2000;Tillotson et al, 2010;Swain et al, 2004;Prutton et al, 2015;Broekman et al, 2002;Greet, 1982;Greet and Whitwell, 1986).…”

“…The preceding report of oesophageal obstruction in a pony (Swain et al 2004) illustrates well the adage, 'when on a dark night you hear hoofbeats approaching, think of horses but remember zebra'. As the authors describe, oesophageal obstruction (choke) is the most common consequence of oesophageal disease in the horse and such cases form a small but significant proportion of emergency calls in any busy equine veterinary practice.…”
