Personal construct psychology in education and learning

Abstract: Recently educational technology has undergone a change of emphasis in the methods and means of teaching: from mass instruction through individualized instruction to group learning. This re-orientation parallels developments within education itself of the three stages of dependent, independent and interdependent learning. This paper discusses the contribution which can be made to this development by personal construct psychology, and in particular the practical role in it of the PEGASUS and SOCIO-GRIDS programs… Show more

“…This comparison and rating consisted of using a 7-point Likert scale on each of the 27 central business model factors. For example, the entrepreneurs rated 'the uncertainty in product technology' of the selected business models on a scale anchored by 1 = low product complexity to 7 = high product complexity (Pope & Keen, 1981;Ginsberg, 1989;Yeung & Watkins, 2000;Fransella et al, 2004;Jankowicz, 2004). Figure 1 illustrates an example of a fictitious entrepreneur's repertory grid protocol based on seven fictitious business models and eight central business model factors.…”

Pope and Keen (1981) noted that teachers who adopt a client-centered approach engage in an encounter with students similar to that found between therapist and patient in client-centered therapy. As client-centered methodology spread from the psychology field to the education field, client-centered terminology was contextualized into studentcentered and later as student-centered strategies (Albrecht & Gross, 1948;Rogers, 1942;Rogers & Freiberg, 1994).…”

“…Progressivism holds that education should involve direct interaction with the environment to promote active thinking. Pope and Keen (1981) argued that this type of thinking is stimulated by cognitive conflict where knowledge is gained through experiential problem-solving situations. Dewey's philosophy and theory of inquiry advocated that knowledge was true only if it was objectively and, when possible, scientifically tested (Dewey, 1910(Dewey, /1997.…”
