Personal Decontamination After Exposure to Simulated Liquid Phase Contaminants: Functional Assessment of a New Unit

Abstract: The capacity of the decontamination unit was found to be 16 volunteers per hour. The ventilation system and guidelines of the decontamination unit were demonstrated to be effective under the conditions examined. The self-decontamination of the staff was not optimal.

“…MeS is of similar persistence, volatility and water solubility to sulphur mustard. While MeS is likely to volatilise it is recoverable and has been used for several human volunteer decontamination studies (Larner et al, ; Ribordy et al, ; Torngren et al, ). Furthermore, previous literature has determined that MeS is the least toxic simulant when mimicking the adsorption/desorption of sulphur mustard in the environment (Bartelt‐Hunt et al, ).…”

“…Chemical simulants of terrorist agents have been used to test the efficacy of soap and water decontamination in a hospital center. This decontamination eliminated the chemical simulants of sarin (simulant = ethyl lactate) and sulfur mustard (simulant = methyl salicylate) entirely within 3 to 6 minutes [35]. In the same study, the water-soluble chemical (ethyl lactate) was entirely removed with a 3-minute water shower without soap [35].…”

“…The majority of the information regarding decontamination and duration is available from the military. The suggested duration of decontamination in published guidelines ranges from between 3 to 5 minutes [33][34][35][36] to 15 to 30 minutes [12,27,37]. The United States Army Center of Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine advocates a tepid water rinsing from head to toe for 1 minute after contaminated clothing is removed.…”

“…In ordinary decontamination procedures, patients' clothes are removed [1]. We measured the heart and respiratory rates with and without clothes to assess the vital sign monitoring before decontamination.…”
