Systems for fast search of personal information are rapidly becoming ubiquitous. Such systems promise to dramatically improve personal information management, yet most are modeled on Web search in which users know very little about the content that they are searching. We describe the design and deployment of a system called Phlat that optimizes search for personal information with an intuitive interface that merges search and browsing through a variety of associative and contextual cues. In addition, Phlat supports a unified tagging (labeling) scheme for organizing personal content across storage systems (files, email, etc.). The system has been deployed to hundreds of employees within our organization. We report on both quantitative and qualitative aspects of system use. Emerging “life-logging” technologies have tremendous potential to augment human autobiographical memory by recording and processing vast amounts of information from an individual’s experiences. In this experiment undergraduate participants wore a SenseCam, a small, sensor-equipped digital camera, as they went about their normal daily activities for five consecutive days. Pictures were captured either at fixed intervals or as triggered by SenseCam’s sensors. On two of five nights, participants watched an end-of-day review of a random subset of pictures captured that day. Participants were tested with a variety of memory measures at intervals of 1, 3, and 8 weeks. The most fruitful of six measures were recognition rating (on a 1–7 scale) and picture-cued recall length. On these tests, end-of-day review enhanced performance relative to no review, while pictures triggered by SenseCam’s sensors showed little difference in performance compared to those taken at fixed time intervals. We discuss the promise of SenseCam as a tool for research and for improving autobiographical memory.

The following PhD project argues for analyzing Personal Information Management (PIM) behaviour on social networks and microblogging platforms, such as Twitter, as such services go far beyond their expected usage and have grown a viable source of information to many users. Of the three main information interaction activities that characterise PIM (finding -keeping -re-finding), only the retrieval of information has received researcher attention on such services. However, recent literature suggests that other PIM related activities occur, that should be further investigated. In addition to motivating the project, this position statement outlines the main research questions and approach, details the current status, which sheds light on how people perform PIM activities in the context of social networks and microblogging platforms. Here we detail some of the key findings and describe our tentative plans for the future. It is this plans that I wish to discuss in the doctoral consortium. MOTIVATION
