Personal information management systems and interfaces: An overview

Abstract: In this paper we present an overview of a Personal Information Management (PIM) System and some examples of the interface applications. PIM involves methods and procedures to store, manage, retrieve and show information. PIM systems are becoming more ubiquitous and present a need for their functions toward improving and enhancing information search results. Therefore, studying the current PIM systems becomes unavoidable in order to develop newer systems. The purpose of this review is to discover and describe t… Show more

“…To be information literature, the value of information tools and information keeping activities cannot be ignored. PIM involves methods and practices to store, retrieve and organize information in an effective manner (Al Nasar et al , 2011). Literature validated that individuals need to be trained in IL and information management (Ince et al , 2019; Mahmood et al , 2021; Safdar and Idrees, 2020; Safdar and Idrees, 2021).…”

“…For example, SDI service, favorite and bookmarking features in browsers, creating different labeled folders to differentiate information can play an important role in managing information at different levels. To better perform PIM systems need to adopt latest features including thumbnail, tagging and managed visualizations (Al Nasar et al, 2011). Most of the studies (Jones et al, 2001(Jones et al, ,2002(Jones et al, , 2003 established that people store their favorite information, however, never able to get back those items.…”

“…A limitation of this system is that, the participants had little practice time with the memory oriented interfaces. Also the user interfaces were different from anything that the user had seen or used before (Al Nasar et al, 2011).…”

“…Our previous study aimed to review and investigate related works on PIM systems in order to improve the design of the PIM user interface (UI). Based on our outcomes, we discovered some of the gaps that needed to be improved and might have contributed significantly to the building of new systems in a highly relevant and contemporary reality to visualize effectively in PIM field such as through the use of different filtering techniques in one system [1].…”

“…PIM has become an important field, for which many systems have been proposed during the last few years. There are needs for a new tool, which can reduce the complexity of a person's information management challenges [1]. On the other hand, digital cameras are now on hand extensively and surveys about customers have supposed that usage of digital cameras will keep growing.…”
