“…The key assumption of the study was that, with age and gained life experience (including sports level and professional sports experience), the kyokushin karatekas’ openness to experience increases. Therefore, the trend in openness to experiences is an (admittedly) small but high-quality sample that should be treated as a reflection of sports experience of karatekas [ 23 ]. The study subjects are also high-level sportsmen with international sport success in kyokushin karate, so sport level is also important [ 38 ].…”

“…However, combat sports champions have significantly better emotional control than champions from other sports groups [ 22 ]. It is also important that, alongside with sport experience, the personality of athletes is more clearly defined: lower neuroticism and higher extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness [ 23 ]. Moreover, female kyokushin karate practitioners have higher neuroticism in relation to males [ 24 ].…”

“…Sport participation has a psychosocial impact on individuals (Laborde et al, 2020;Cannella et al, 2021) and even shapes their personality (Piepiora et al, 2022). People who engage in sport and exercise activities have different personality traits than those who do not (Eagleton et al, 2007), and this influence is more profound in longer and deeper sport participation (Piepiora et al, 2022). For example, athletes are often found to have more vigor, less fatigue (Eagleton et al, 2007), and more extraversion (Allen et al, 2021;Piepiora, 2021a).…”

“…From the gene-environment perspective, a specific gene which is believed to construct a certain personality (e.g., 5-HTT) is found to be associated with positive psychological development in the context of sport (Golby & Sheard, 2006). This personalityshaping effect of sport might be caused by the competence of rivalries (Piepiora, 2021a), and the pressures on the performance might strengthen specific personality (Piepiora et al, 2022). For example, this personality-shaping effect of sport becomes stronger given success in sport (Steca et al, 2018;Allen et al, 2021), which often accompanies self-achievement from fans and media (Allen & Desille, 2017).…”

“…On the other hand, atheist athletes approach mental preparation only through targeted psychological methods and a belief in their own sense of value and agency. Both believers and non-believers are very effective, nonetheless [18,19,20]. In both groups, rituals are the norm, and they trigger mental readiness for competition [21,22,23].…”
