Personality Characteristics and Acute Symptom Response Predict Chronic Symptoms After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Abstract: Objective: Despite consensus that personality influences mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) recovery, it has been underexamined. We evaluated the extent to which diverse personality and psychiatric symptom dimensions predict mTBI recovery. Methods: This prospective cohort study involved psychological assessments of hospital patients with mTBI (n = 75; median = 2 days post-injury, range = 0–12 days) and orthopedic trauma controls (OTC; n = 79) who were used for comparison in mediation mod… Show more

“…Some studies have pointed out that patients with chronic diseases are prone to produce more psychological symptoms and more psychological problems and have a certain degree of influence on the development and prognosis of the disease. Different psychological and social factors and psychological characteristics of personality of patients with different chronic diseases lead to different stress on the immune system [ 9 ]. At present, studies have presented that patients with chronic diseases such as cancer, chronic cheilitis, burning mouth syndrome, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and diabetes have different degrees of psychological problems [ 10 ].…”

“…In the current study, history of depression was a significant predictor of standard neuropsychological performance three months after mild traumatic injury, and previous research in older adults also suggests that psychosocial factors may be associated with poor global recovery after mTBI, including poor expectations of recovery, depression, and fatigue (Kristman et al, 2016). Research in younger cohorts has also examined postconcussive symptoms after different types of injury (i.e., mTBI or orthopedic injury) and found certain personality traits were useful to explain postconcussive symptoms, regardless of injury type (Parker et al, 2021). Whether any or all these explanations can be demonstrated to directly impact cognitive performance three months postinjury in older people is yet to be determined.…”

“…Previous studies have been carried out on organic personality disorders caused by craniocerebral trauma, mainly focusing on the incidence rate of personality disorders and relevant influencing factors (26)(27)(28). It is generally recognized that frontal and temporal lobe injuries are related to personality disorders (29,30).…”
