Analyses of MMPI scores revealed significant differences on nine of the clinical and validity scales. Mutilators also had more frequent elevations over 70. Interpretation of scale and subscale configurations indicates that mutilators have more somatic complaints, subjective distress, alienation, inmature defenses, and acting‐out tendencies than control… Show more

“…, thereby ignoring the signs that self-harm and suicide attempt are two distinct phenomena (Fulwiler et al, 1997;Muehlenkamp & Gutierrez, 2004;Penn et al, 2003;Shea, 1993). An etiological separation is no longer possible after a study has been carried out (McCleave & Latham, 1998).…”

“…These internal factors may be related to long-standing personality traits; however, few studies have considered personality traits of individuals who self-injure, and available studies often offer contradictory findings. Using the Five Factor Model, clinical samples of those practicing NSSI have demonstrated significantly lower levels of Extraversion [14,15] and higher levels of Neuroticism [14] while a sample of prisoners reported higher levels of Extraversion [16]. Studies of NSSI using undergraduate samples have found higher levels of Neuroticism and Openness to experience [8,17] but have differed on the remaining factors.…”
