Personality Correlates of Platelet Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) Activity in Female and Male Subjects

Abstract: Associations between platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity and scale scores from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, the Impulsiveness-Venturesomeness-Empathy inventory and the Karolinska Scales of Personality were studied in 32 female and 29 male students (age range 17–19 years). There were significant negative correlations between MAO activity and extra version-related scales for male subjects; in the female group the correlations were also negative but nonsignificant. When comparing subgroups with lo… Show more

“…Thus, in the male group, criminal offending was associated with psychopathyrelated personality traits. Such traits have been reported to characterize male subjects with early-onset alcohol problems, and are repeatedly found to be linked to underlying biological markers (af Klinteberg et al, 1987;von Knorring et al, 1987;Alm et al, 1996;von Knorring and Oreland, 1996). Among female subjects, the criminal group was found to be higher in cognitive-social anxiety (the psychasthenia scale), and to display less guilty conscience than non-criminal females.…”

“…However, studies relating 5-HT-induced endocrine responses to personality traits are rare. However, an extrapolation from clinical states to personality traits with respect to 5-HT has been demonstrated in the past by other indicators of central 5-HT function like platelet MAO-B [26][27][28] or CSF 5-HIAA levels [29,30].…”

“…In earlier research, low activity of the enzyme mono amine oxidase (MAO; EC 1.4.3.4) in platelets has consis tently been associated with psychiatric syndromes charac terized as 'disinhibitory psychopathology' [1][2][3] and with temperaments underlying disinhibited or 'externalizing' behaviors [4][5][6], Low activities of platelet MAO tend to be connected with sensation-seeking traits [7,8] and impulsivity [5], Attempts to link the field of biological markers of monoamine systems to that of temperament or personality variables, associated with a disposition to different forms of psychosocial deviancy and psychiatric illness, have been presented [for reviews, see ref. 9.…”
