Personality trait risk factors for attempted suicide among young women with eating disorders

Abstract: - This study provides interesting results concerning the personality traits of young women with both eating disorders and suicidal behaviour. Students and those with purging behaviour are most at risk. Young women should be given more attention with regard to the risk of suicide attempts if they: (a). have AN-R with a tendency to self-punishment and antisocial conduct, (b). have AN-P with multiple physical complaints, are not at ease in social situations and have antisocial behaviour, or (c). if they have BN-P… Show more

“…This relationship has been observed in other clinical populations (e.g., Campos et al, 2012Campos et al, , 2013Goldblatt, 2008;Lamis, et al, 2010;Nepon et al, 2010;Youssef et al, 2004) and in individuals bereaved by suicide, with other reports confirming that complicated grief and depression are related to suicidal ideation (Mitchell et al, 2005). Our findings reaffirm the need to intervene with individuals bereaved by suicide to reduce distress as well as suicidal ideation and risk.…”

“…In clinical and nonclinical populations, extreme psychological distress has been considered a major risk factor for suicidal ideation (Rosenfeld, Breitbart, Krivo, & Chochinov, 2000) and psychological distress has been shown to make a large contribution to suicide behavior (e.g., Hirsch, Webb, & Jeglic, 2011;Kim et al, 2003;Lamis, Malone, Langhinrichsen-Rohling, & Elis, 2010;Martin, 1997;Overholser, Freheit, & DiFilippo, 1997;Youssef et al, 2004;Zayas, Hausmann-Stabile, & Kuhlberg, 2011). In the general population, suicidal ideation is related with psychiatric illness and depressive mood (Bae, Lee, Cho, Kim, Im, & Cho, 2013) and several empirical studies linked depression, anxiety, and hostility with suicidal ideation (e.g., Campos, Besser, & Blatt, 2012, 2013Goldblatt, 2008;Lamis et al, 2010;Nepon, Belik, Bolton, & Sareen, 2010;Youssef et al, 2004).…”

Of these studies, two used DSM-III-R (APA, 1987) criteria, 15,24 the other 12 used DSM-IV (APA 1994) criteria.…”

“…Higher rates were reported for AN-BP compared to AN-R patients (Favaro & Santonastaso, 1997;Bulik et al, 2008;Milos et al, 2004;Youssef et al, 2004;Forcano et al, 2011). "Migration" from AN-R to AN-BP increased the likelihood of a suicide attempt (Foulon et al, 2007).…”
