Personalization in distributed e-learning environments

Abstract: Personalized support for learners becomes even more important, when e-Learning takes place in open and dynamic learning and information networks. This paper shows how to realize personalized learning support in distributed learning environments based on Semantic Web technologies. Our approach fills the existing gap between current adaptive educational systems with well-established personalization functionality, and open, dynamic learning repository networks. We propose a service-based architecture for establis… Show more

“…In e-learning domain, semantic web technology can guide and support developers, instructors, and learners to organize, personalize, and publish learning content and even to discover, generate, and compose learning content [5]. A conceptual content development and deployment architecture allows us to distinguish and locate the different applications and to discuss and assess the potential of the underlying technologies.…”

“…The knowledge space which gets created due to the interactions of instructors, developers and learners has the implicit relations between knowledge units and behavioral preferences of learners that can be made understood to the machines with the help of semantic web technology [5].…”

“…Each system maintains a user model for its own purposes of adaptation, and may interact with other systems to collect information about the user at a particular time and with specific purposes, in a peer-to-peer way. Similar decentralized solutions for user model interoperability are the ones of Lorenz (2005), Heckmann (2005), Dolog et al (2004). A different approach proposed in the literature is the 'centralized solution' (Kobsa 2007), where the aim is to gather as many data about a user as possible in a central shared space.…”

“…Through this continuing process new network phenomena occurs, such as distributed learning repositories [12], virtual learning communities and digital networks, such as the European School Net (www.eun.org/portal/index.htm) and the PROLEARN Virtual Competence Center (www.prolearn-online.com), offering services for education in general or to businesses. As there are many pedagogical innovations in technology enhanced learning and a growing number of technical infrastructures, the demand for technology enhanced learning services is growing, too.…”
