Personalized medicine: A pediatric perspective

Abstract: The aim of pediatric personalized medicine is to uniquely combine genetic variation with developmental stage and environmental exposure to provide a tailored preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic regimen. Recent advances in genomic research have identified many genetic variants that may be related to allergic and inflammatory disease and therapeutic response. These include variants involved in immune response, barrier proteins, and medication response. Current evidence also suggests that the effect of geneti… Show more

“…Childhood disorders in which pharmacogenetic studies have most commonly been conducted include acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, attention–deficit hyperactivity disorder, growth hormone deficiency, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, atopic dermatitis and asthma (see [19, 22, 23] for reviews). A good example of a childhood condition where there will be benefits from the use of pharmacogenetics is acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).…”

“…These experiences include the family environment in which children are raised, the quality of the health-care received pre-and post-natally, the diet, the physical activity, and other lifestyle behaviors established early on that may track into adulthood, and the decisions and actions that children, adolescents, and their families take that promote or compromise both short-and long-term health outcomes (Shonkoff, Boyce, & McEwen, 2009). When considered in conjunction with genetics and the results of genetic tests, these factors may someday bring us a step closer to realizing the potential of personalized medicine for young people (Arnold & Jones, 2009;Balistreri & Helton, 2009). The results of large-scale gene sequencing efforts answering fundamental questions about the heritability of common disease will further drive this discovery process (Maher, 2008).…”

“…Недавние достижения в области гено-мики выявили множество генетических вариантов, которые могут быть связаны, в частности, с аллерги-ческими и воспалительными заболеваниями. К ним относятся биологические соединения, участвующие в иммунном ответе, барьерные белки и лекарствен-ные реакции [8]. В этих случаях следует иметь в виду, что модели, которые включают в себя информацию всего генома, более полно объясняют генетическую изменчивость [9,10].…”
