Perspectives of ambient intelligence in the home environment

Abstract: Ambient Intelligence is a vision of the future information society stemming from the convergence of ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication and intelligent user-friendly interfaces. It offers an opportunity to realise an old dream, i.e. the smart or intelligent home. Will it fulfil the promises or is it just an illusion - offering apparently easy living while actually increasing the complexity of life? This article touches upon this question by discussing the technologies, applications and social implic… Show more

“…Wright et al [57] present several critical scenarios for AAL applications ranging from the case of denial of service causing severe injuries or the death of the monitored patient, to the case of burglars able to obtain details on the lifestyle of an elder living alone. Security threats may also come from the ability of Intelligent Environments to collect large amounts of data about each individual [28].…”

“…Ambient Intelligence (AmI) stems from the convergence of ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication and intelligent user-friendly interfaces and creates environments that are characterized by their ubiquity, transparency and intelligence [6]. AmI is of great interest to society because in a near future it can help us to do our work, improve our health, do house chores, etc.…”

“…The most common scenario, several times depicted in literature, is the intelligent home/office where sensors control ambience variables such as lighting and temperature based on sensors distributed around the building. Integration of communication devices is also referenced [10], and involves the possibility to make use of the house/office to communicate presence and/or location.…”
