Perspectives on Near ZEB Renovation Projects for Residential Buildings: The Spanish Case

Abstract: EU regulations are gradually moving towards policies that reduce energy consumption and its environmental impact. To reach this goal, improving energy efficiency in residential buildings is a key action line. The European Parliament adopted the Near Zero-Energy Building (nZEB) as the energy efficiency paradigm through Directive 2010/31/EU, but a common technical and legislative framework for energy renovations is yet to be established. In this paper, the nZEB definition by COHERENO was adopted to evaluate seve… Show more

“…However, the potential reduction of the environmental impact of new buildings is negligible compared to that of existing ones [18][19][20][21][22]. The analysis of several energy renovation packages in a given building and the evaluation of the related costs in two different economic scenarios are useful to derive the optimal solution both in terms of energy performance and global costs [23].…”

“…The use of reference buildings representative of a building stock is widely applied in the European countries, as presented in Mata et al [10], Ballarini et al [11], Dascalaki et al [12], Patiño-Cambeiro et al [13] and Wyrwa et al [14]. Methodologies to define reference buildings are provided, for instance, by Brandão de Vasconcelos et al [15] and Filogamo et al [16].…”

“…NZEBs concept is developed to represents a zero or low energy building that using renewable energy systems installed to meet the buildings energy consumption demands (Torcellini et al, 2010). Apart from that, Patiño et al, (2016) stated that NZEBs are buildings that achieve the benchmark efficiency by pursuing or outperforming a list of technical requisites. Therefore, NZEBs can represent buildings that utilise the renewable energy technologies and able enable to develop a network of clean domestic energy assets.…”
