Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has garnered much attention due to its facile and chemically free fabrication technique. Metal nanoparticle incorporation into the LIG matrix can improve its electrical and catalytical properties for environmental application. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) nanoparticle-incorporated LIG (Fe-LIG) and sulfidized-nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) nanoparticle-incorporated LIG (SFe-LIG) surfaces. The sheets were first fabricated to investigate nanoparticle loading, successful incorporation in the LIG matrix, and electrochemical performance as electrodes. Fe-LIG and SFe-LIG sheets showed ∼3–3.5 times more charge density as compared with the control LIG sheet. The XPS and its deconvolution confirmed the presence of nZVI and S-nZVI in the Fe-LIG and SFe-LIG surfaces, which can generate in situ hydroxyl radical (•OH) via iron activation of electrogenerated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in short in situ electro-Fenton process. After confirmation of the successful incorporation of iron-based nanoparticles in the LIG matrix, filters were fabricated to demonstrate the application in the flow-through filtration. The Fe-LIG and SFe-LIG filters showed ∼10–30% enhanced methylene blue removal under the application of 2.5 V at ∼1000 LMH flux. The Fe-LIG and SFe-LIG filters also showed complete 6-log bacteria and virus removal at 2.5 and 5 V, respectively, while the LIG filters showed only ∼4-log removal. Such enhanced removal by the Fe-LIG and SFe-LIG filters as compared to LIG filters is attributed to the improved charge density, electrochemical activity, and in situ electro-Fenton process. The study shows the potential to develop catalytic LIG-based surfaces for various applications, including contaminant removal and microbial inactivation.

During operation, the inevitable fouling of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes severely affects their performance in industrial separation processes, desalination, and wastewater treatment, necessitating effective fouling monitoring. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is a facile method for fabricating UF electroconductive membranes (ECMs) and has shown enhanced emerging contaminant removal, antibiofilm and antimicrobial properties. However, no study has investigated the use of electrical signals for monitoring of organic fouling in LIG-based ECMs. This study investigates using LIG-based ECMs as an advanced tool for fouling detection and monitoring using a neutral foulant. The effect of fouling on electrical responses like surface resistance, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was investigated in ex situ and in situ modes with three-electrode and two-electrode systems. Current responses showed a decreasing trend with fouling cycles, while the Nyquist plot showed both rightward and upward shifts with an increase in fouling. The normalized changes in EIS-derived resistance and impedance were found to be more sensitive than flux signals in the detection of fouling and continuous monitoring. The LIG-based ECM performs the dual role of the membrane as well as an advanced fouling monitoring tool, demonstrating early detection of fouling and a sudden increase in foulant concentration as compared to conventional methods. Such LIG-based ECMs provide better fouling monitoring strategies via both ex situ and in situ monitoring and can be used with more field-applicable two-electrode systems for industrial-scale applications. This can further help in optimizing fouling mitigation strategies for desalination and wastewater treatment.

In Situ Oxidative, Catalytic Oxidative, and Nonoxidative Electrocleaning of Fouled Conductive Membranes

Electroconductive membrane (ECM) is a major advancement in the field of membrane technology, which has the potential for fouling mitigation due to its various action mechanisms. However, electrocleaning of a laser-induced graphene (LIG)-based ECM has not been investigated for its potential fouling mitigation; furthermore, nonoxidative electrocleaning has not been explored for any ECMs. In this study, the use of a LIG-based ECM for fouling inhibition and cleaning of fouled ECMs was investigated via oxidative, catalytic oxidative, and nonoxidative electrocleaning for low levels of fouling and severe fouling, as low fouled membranes were easily cleaned. Crossflow water washing and backwashing showed only ∼5−10% flux recovery, while oxidative electrocleaning showed ∼60−80% flux recovery. On the other hand, in situ catalytic oxidative and nonoxidative electrocleaning showed ∼90−100% flux recovery. Oxidative and catalytic oxidative electrocleaning can cause damage to the LIG-based ECMs/filters under anodic potential. On the contrary, nonoxidative electrocleaning was found to extend the life of the ECMs/filters due to inhibition of the electrochemical oxidation and self-oxidation of the ECMs/filters. For severe fouling, oxidative and nonoxidative methods showed limited flux recovery, while catalytic oxidative electrocleaning showed ∼100% flux recovery. The study shows the advantage of nonoxidative electrocleaning for low fouling, while catalytic oxidative electrocleaning can address severe fouling with only 1−5 min of operation.
