Pertussis in Latin America: epidemiology and control strategies

Abstract: Pertussis is a serious respiratory disease in infants that can also affect children and adults. Vaccination against pertussis was introduced in the 1950s and in the 1990s a resurgence of pertussis was observed worldwide. The aim of this work is to summarize the recent data concerning pertussis disease in different countries of Latin America. In this geographic region, pertussis is nationally notifiable and cases should be reported to the appropriate health department/Ministry. Though the surveillance systems a… Show more

“…1,2 Childhood immunization with wholecell pertussis (wP) containing vaccines led to important reduction in pertussis incidence in countries that achieved high vaccine coverage. 2,3 However, a global reemergence of pertussis has been observed in the last 20 years, in spite of sustained high vaccine coverage. [1][2][3] Hypotheses to explain this reemergence are postvaccination waning immunity; reduced effectiveness of acellular vaccines; implementation of molecular methods for diagnosis; improvement of surveillance systems; enhanced disease awareness; and genetic changes in the pathogen.…”

“…Overall, most cases in these countries are diagnosed on the basis of bacterial culture, the sensitivity of which varies according to the stage of the infection [24, 25]. Adherence to screening recommendations and access to healthcare influence early detection of pertussis infection.…”
