Urban drainage difficulties have sparked debates and conflicts because of population growth and land use. Expanding urban infrastructure has led to an increase in impermeable zones, which prevent water from seeping into the ground and percolating. Rapid urbanization, population growth, and climate change have put strain on water management in Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). Urban flooding is becoming more frequent, which has a negative impact on daily life and causes major damage. This study assesses the possibilities for controlling runoff volume through stormwater management in Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). To counteract floods brought on by urbanization, pervious concrete, a substance that allows water to seep through floors or seams, is essential. Dosing strategies must be used, concentrating on aggregate content and water/cement ratio (water/cement (w/c)), to obtain acceptable traces. The purpose of this study is to evaluate permeable concrete's effectiveness as a flood-prevention alternative. A review of books, journals, monographic works, and standards is included as part of a bibliographical research project. The strengths of the previous concrete ranged from 2.8 to 28 MPa, according to data gathered after 28 days, falling within the normal range of ACI 522R:06 (2006) and below the normal range of 10 MPa. The porous concrete successfully percolated precipitated water in just a short period, demonstrating its potential as a successful substitute for flood prevention.

The interface between aggregate and cement matrix and the strength of the cementation layer between aggregates are the key factors affecting the strength of pervious concrete. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effects of porosity, compressive strength and elastic modulus of pervious concrete before and after freeze–thaw cycles. The effective porosity and total porosity were obtained by the underwater weighing and CT (computed tomography) image analysis methods. Uniaxial and triaxle compression tests were carried out to obtain the strength and elastic modulus of pervious concrete considering pore and fiber. The results indicated that the effective modulus and effective stress were closely related to the porosity, and the continuous fracture of cementation points between aggregates caused damage to pervious concrete. Inclined shear failure of pervious concrete occurred under uniaxial pressure, and the strength and elastic modulus increased with increases in confining pressure. With the increase in freeze–thaw cycles, the porosity increased linearly, the strength and elastic modulus decreased and a mutational point appeared between 40 and 50 times during the freeze–thaw cycles. The fiber enhanced the strength of the cementation layer and increased the connection between aggregates, thus improving the strength and integrity of pervious concrete. This work is needed to serve as a reference for the fracture mechanism of pervious concrete and the effect of freeze–thaw cycles considering pore and fiber.

Flexural-Fatigue Properties of Sustainable Pervious Concrete Pavement Material Containing Ground Tire Rubber and Silica Fume

With the development of urbanization, pervious concrete has been increasingly used in urban road pavement structures. The objective of this paper was to investigate the effect of stress levels and modifier (ground tire rubber and silica fume) on the fatigue life of pervious concrete and establish the fatigue equations with different survival probabilities. In order to improve the deformability of pervious concrete without sacrificing its strength, ground tire rubber and silica fume were added into pervious concrete. Two kinds of pervious concrete, control pervious concrete and ground tire rubber and silica fume modified pervious concrete, were made in the laboratory. The pervious concrete beam specimens of 100 × 100 × 400 mm were casted, and the static flexural strength and flexural strain of the two kinds of pervious concrete were tested. The fatigue lives of two pervious concretes were tested using MTS fatigue testing machine under four different stress levels (0.85, 0.80, 0.75, and 0.70). The fatigue life was analyzed by two-parameter Weibull distribution. The parameters of Weibull distribution were determined by graphical method, maximum likelihood method and moment method. The Kolmogorov–Smirnov test was used to test the Weibull distribution and the fatigue equations under different survival probabilities were established. The results showed that ground tire rubber and silica fume modified pervious concrete had better deformability while ensuring strength compared to control pervious concrete. The addition of ground tire rubber and silica fume improved the fatigue life of pervious concrete. The two-parameter Weibull distribution was suitable to characterize the fatigue characteristics and predict the fatigue life of pervious concrete. Fatigue equations with different survival probabilities were a good guide for pervious concrete design.
