Pest categorisation of Colletotrichum fructicola

Abstract: The EFSA Plant Health Panel performed a pest categorisation of Colletotrichum fructicola Prihast., a well‐defined polyphagous fungus of the C. gloeosporioides complex which has been reported from all the five continents to cause anthracnose, bitter rot and leaf spotting diseases on over 90 cultivated and non‐cultivated woody or herbaceous plant species. The pathogen is not included in EU Commission Implementing Regulati… Show more

“…Among Colletotrichum species in the gloeosporioides species complex, C. fructicola has a very broad host range, isolated from more than eight plant families as endophytes and plant pathogens [ 48 ]. It has been reported from America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania [ 38 ]. In this study, we isolated and illustrated C. fructicola as the first report of Colletotrichum species associated with pineapple in Thailand, based on molecular and morphological analyses.…”

“…Many Colletotrichum species have been reported from different hosts in Thailand such as C. aenigma [ 17 ], C. aeschynomenes [ 18 ], C. artocarpicola [ 19 ], C. asianum [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ], C. boninense [ 18 , 24 ], C. brevisporum [ 16 , 25 , 26 , 27 ], C. chiangraiense [ 24 , 28 ], C. cordylinicola [ 21 , 29 , 30 ], C. endophytica [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 ], C. orchidearum [ 24 , 25 ], C. orchidophilum [ 24 ], C. plurivorum [ 35 ], and C. siamense [ 16 , 21 , 24 , 36 , 37 ], majority belonging to gloeosporioides species complex. Colletotrichum fructicola is one of the most invasive species and has been reported as the causal agent of anthracnose, leaf spots and bitter rots in more than 90 plant species [ 38 ]. It was originally isolated from Coffea arabica in northern Thailand [ 39 ].…”

“…These Colletotrichum species could spread to other areas where they would likely reduce crop yield and quality. It is therefore important to know the temperature requirements and other environmental conditions favorable for the development of Colletotrichum species in order to support pest risk assessment (Jeger et al, 2018;Bragard et al, 2021) and climate matching analysis regarding the introduction of anthracnose pathogens in new areas (Sutherst et al, 2011).…”

“…C. fructicola is a member of the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex on the basis of multigene phylogenies and was originally reported as the causal agent of coffee ( Coffea arabica ) berry diseases in northern Thailand (European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Plant Health [PLH] et al, 2021; Prihastuti et al, 2009; Weir et al, 2012). C .…”
