Pesticide residue levels in surface water, using a passive sampler and in the sediment along the littoral zone of Lake Ziway at selected sites

Abstract: Diaion® HP-20 resin passive samplers deployed in water and sediment samples collected from Lake Ziway were analyzed for 30 organochlorine, organophosphorus, carboxamide, and pyrethroid pesticide residues. The samples were collected from purposely selected sampling stations in five sites on Lake Ziway. Levels of selected pesticides were determined by GC–MS/MS in all samples. p,p′DDE and boscalid residues were the only detected pesticides in sediment samples. Similarly, only metalaxyl and boscalid residues were … Show more

“…Boscalid was the only pesticide having a calibrated DT50.w (500 days), a hundred times longer than the PPDB value (5 days), which may explain the low model performance according to this molecule. However, other sources substantiate the belief that boscalid is stable in water and sediments and is rather adsorbed on sediments (Keith and Walker, 1992;Mergia et al, 2022), assisting the mass budget results (Fig. 4).…”

“…Residue of Surface Sediment Organochlorine residues were not detected in the sediments of all sampling sites of Lake Singkarak (Table 3), DDT metabolites could be detected due to the use of DDT in the past. Only DDT metabolites were found in sediments, whereas concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (heptachlor, dieldrin, DDT) were detected below detection limits in several different lakes (Dvoršćak et al, 2019;Mergia et al, 2022;Hu & Tao, 2023).…”

“…Despite the benefts of pesticides, their negative efects on human health and environmental quality have been extensively studied worldwide and are a major source of concern on a local, national, regional, and international scale [19]. Ethiopia has limited knowledge regarding the quantity of pesticide residues present in fruits and vegetables and how such residues afect human health [20]. Tus, the objective of this review is to better inform the public on the impacts of pesticide residues and available strategies for reducing them in fruits and vegetables.…”
