Pesticide Residues and Heavy Metals in Lake Victoria Nile Perch, Lates niloticus, Belly Flap Oil

Abstract: Oil was extracted from the belly flaps of varied sizes of Nile perch caught from Lake Victoria (Uganda). The oil was analyzed for pesticide residues and heavy metals. Total residual concentration of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, endosulfan, hexachlorocyclohexane, hexachlorobenzene, heptachlor, chlordane, endrin, aldrin and chlorofenvinphos increased significantly (p < 0.05) with fish size. Mercury and lead were detected in most samples while arsenic and cadmium were below detection limits. Nile perch may, t… Show more

“…Bakyaita, 2010). Lead and Hg have been detected in African fish eagles, Marabou storks and Nile perch (Hollamby et al, 2004;Ogwok, Muyonga & Sserunjogi, 2009). Further, high levels of Pb and Cd have been reported in milk from farms in Wakiso district (Nyakairu, Muhwezi & Biryomumaisho, 2011).…”

“…Dieldrin is highly persistent in the environment and its absence could mean that no previous application was carried out in Mukono. In spite of the reported use of the pesticide, residual levels of dieldrin are still reported as being below LOD in fish, African fish eagle and marabou stork from Lake Victoria basin [15,16]. Low levels of dieldrin residue in the Lake Victoria environment are explained by the current reduced usage in contrast with former application against banana weevils [17].…”

“…Residual levels of DDT and its metabolites in carrots may be a result of drift or water runoff from indoor application. Trace levels of DDT metabolite, just like other organochlorine pesticides, were previously detected in fish, birds and animal products around Lake Victoria basin [15][16][17].…”

“…Pesticide is a double edged sword, which plays very important roles in increasing crop production and income, but it also causes some negative effects, such as environmental pollutions [1], [2], homicidal and suicidal accident [3], cancer and other diseases [4]. Among the total amount of pesticide in china, more than 40% of them are chiral [5], and this ratio is increasing as more and more complex structures are being developed.…”
