Pesticides in Urban Atmospheres

Abstract: Pesticides in Urban Atmospheres .1 study of airborne particulate pesticides in urban atmospheres ivas conducted in 1963 and W6/+. Samples were collected in eight agricultural communities and in jour communities with active insect control programs. Sampling and analysis procedures are described, briefly. Ambient concentrations of the various pesticides found in the different communities are presented. Survey, community; pollutant, pesticides, particulates.

“…Arthur et al 1976 collected weekly air samples and analyzed them for a suite of pesticides, most of which have since been discontinued in the United States. There have been a few national studies that have included agricultural Ž and urban sites in Mississippi, Tabor, 1965;Stan-. ley et al, 1971;Kutz et al, 1976 , but these studies focused on pesticides that were then in use, most of which are no longer used in the United States.…”

“…Dieldrin, alpha and gamma HCH, diazinon, and malathion are all used on cropland in southern Florida and were all detected in air samples collected at sites in southern Florida (Majewski and Capel, 1995). Aldrin was detected in air samples collected in Florida City (Tabor, 1965). Several pesticides, including chlordane, oxychlordane, parathion, and methylparathion, were detected in air samples collected in Miami in 1975 (Kutz and others, 1976).…”

“…The widespread use of agricultural pesticides has resulted in the observation of many such compounds in soil and water 20 samples. While the ecological implications of these observations have been the focus of much research, little work has focused on their atmospheric chemistry, despite the fact that many of these pesticides are transported through the atmosphere (Bedos et al, 2006;Coscollà et al, 2008;LeNoir et al, 1999;Majewski et al, 2014;Peck A.M, 2005;Rice et al, 2002;Sauret et al, 2000;Tabor, 1965;White et al, 2006). The chemical fate of compounds in the atmosphere, including oxidation, gas-particle partitioning, and surface deposition ultimately controls their chemical identities and concentrations, and thus their impact on 25 ecosystems and human health.…”
