“…The elongation of the ClÁ Á ÁCl distances in phase and the shortening of ClÁ Á ÁC distances may be caused by the electrostatic contribution to the interactions between these atoms. The absence of short ClÁ Á ÁCl contacts in phases and is consistent in certain aspects with the chlorophobic effect postulated for chlorinated aromatic compounds by Grineva & Zorky (1998, 2000a.…”

“…Consideration of the crystal habit and its rate of growth, and an inspection of the molecular arrangement indicates that the strongest intermolecular interactions are within the layers perpendicular to [001]. These observations can be interpreted as consistent with the existence of the chlorophobic effect postulated by Grineva & Zorky (1998. Therefore, further studies on the structure of compounds with very weakly interacting molecules need to be carried out to resolve the role of halogen-Á Á Áhalogen interactions in the formation of crystals.…”

“…They are thought to play an important role in molecular arrangement in crystals (Legon, 1999;Metrangolo & Resnati, 2001). There is also an alternative hypothesis that the occurrence of short ClÁ Á ÁCl distances results from the socalled chlorophobic effect (Grineva & Zorky, 1998, in which the molecules arrange themselves in order to minimize the number of contacts between the Cl atoms and atoms of other types. The suggestion of this effect was based on the observation made for aromatic chloro derivatives that interactions with Cl atoms are the least favourable (least attractive).…”

“…Thus, for additional clarity, we considered this crystal structure from the viewpoint of intermolecular interaction energies, as first proposed by Zorkii and co-authors [51][52][53], and successfully used by other authors [54,55].…”
