pH-responsive molecular assemblies of pyridylbutadiene derivative with cucurbit[7]uril

Abstract: The interaction between red-emitting pyridinium derivative [4-((1E,3E)-4-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)buta-1,3-dien-1-yl)-1-methylpyridin-1-ium] (DABP) and cucurbit [7]uril was investigated using optical absorption, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence and anisotropy measurements. The changes in the UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence spectral characteristics and lifetime, with a change in pH, reveal efficient binding of CB7 to the dye molecule. The cucurbit [7]uril encapsulated DABP brings $1.5 units upward pK… Show more

“…The study of morphological transformations in CPs is fascinating since a small structural change can significantly affect their physicochemical properties. For this reason, studies have been carried out on structural changes related to the variation in pH [13], the concentration of reagents [12], the presence of other components [14,15], the application of ultrasound [16,17], among others [18][19][20]. Additionally, the particle size of CCs can be reduced from micrometers to nanometers by modifying their synthetic conditions allowing new and exciting applications [21,22].…”

“…[10][11][12][13][14] In particular, cucurbit [7]uril CB [7] has moderate water solubility and it is able to form host-guest interactions with N-methylpyridinium derivatives. 9,15 For example, a series of dialkyl-4,4 0 -bipyridinium (viologen) dicationic guests may lead to two different types of complexes with CB [7], pseudorotaxane inclusion or external complex, depending on the length of aliphatic chain. The inclusion of N-methyl and N-ethyl viologen takes place with these two guests in such a way that the main binding site for CB [7] is the aromatic viologen residue namely ''pseudorotaxane structures''.…”
