pH‐sensitive crosslinked guar gum‐based superabsorbent hydrogels: Swelling response in simulated environments and water retention behavior in plant growth media

Abstract: Crosslinked guar gum-g-polyacrylate (cl-GG-g-PA) superabsorbent hydrogels were prepared to explore their potential as soil conditioners and carriers. The hydrogels were prepared by in situ grafting polymerization and crosslinking of acrylamide onto a natural GG followed by hydrolysis. Microwave-initiated synthesis under the chosen experimental conditions did not exhibit any significant improvement over the conventional technique. The optimization studies of various synthesis parameters, namely, monomer concent… Show more

“…Hydrogels, the crosslinked hydrophilic polymers, have been reported effective in improving hydro‐physical properties of plant growth media and as carriers for controlled release of drugs, pesticides, and fertilizers . Hydrogel composites, the organic–inorganic hybrid hydrogels, are finding a lot of attention in biomedical and agricultural applications due to unique fluid absorption and retention‐release properties .…”

“…Hydrogels and hydrogel composites are now finding considerable attention in the field of agriculture due to their unique water absorption and retention‐release properties . They have been reported effective in improving hydrophysical properties of soil and as carriers for controlled release of agrochemicals . More recently they are extensively reported as carrier for fertilizer formulations including macro and micronutrients .…”

“…In addition, water resources have been shown to be insufficient to produce food in many countries. Irrigation accounts for around 70% of the total anthropogenic water use, corresponding to 2,500 out of 3,800 km 3 . 1 In arid and semi-arid regions, where water supplies are limited, agricultural practices increase the water consumption resulting in the degradation of natural ecosystems.…”

“…Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), also known as hydrogels, have been used in recent years as an alternative to improve the management of water use in agricultural operations. 3 Hydrogels are cross-linked materials which are able to absorb and retain large amounts of water (many times their weight). They increase the water retention properties of growing media and plant growth.…”
