ResumoA presença de micropoluentes em águas residuárias e naturais, como fármacos, tem despertado preocupação na comunidade científica devido a sua ocorrência, persistência e potencial deletério à saúde humana e aos ecossistemas. Tal preocupação tem sido impulsionada pela capacidade de detecção de substâncias químicas por equipamentos avançados e métodos mais sensíveis. Dessa forma, estudos de investigação e técnicas de tratamento para degradação de compostos farmacêuticos em matrizes aquosas estão sendo intensificados. Diante da relevância do assunto, este artigo consiste em uma revisão da literatura sobre fármacos largamente encontrados no ambiente, principalmente em águas residuárias e superficiais. Palavras-chave: Micropoluentes. Determinação analítica. Tratamento. AbstractThe presence of micropollutants in wastewater and natural waters, such as pharmaceuticals, have aroused concern in the scientific community due to their occurrence, persistence and deleterious potential to human health and ecosystems. Such concern has been boosted by the ability to detect chemicals by advanced equipment and more sensitive methods. Thus, research studies and treatment techniques for the degradation of pharmaceutical compounds in aqueous matrices are being intensified. Given the relevance of the subject, this article consists of a review of the literature on pharmaceuticals widely found in the environment, mainly in wastewater and surface water.

Abstract. Waters released from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are a relevant source of pharmaceuticals and personal care products to the aquatic environment, since many of them are not effectively removed by the treatment system. The consumption of these products increased in the last decades and concerns have consequently risen about their possible adverse effects on the freshwater ecosystem. In this study, we present a simple, yet effective, analytical model of transport of contaminants released in surface waters by WWTPs. Transport of dissolved species is modeled by solving the Advection-Dispersion- 5Reaction Equation (ADRE) along the river network by using a Lagrangian approach. We applied this model to concentration data of five pharmaceuticals: diclofenac, ketoprofen, clarithromycin, sulfamethoxazole and irbesartan collected in two field campaigns, conducted in February and July 2015, in the Adige river, North-East of Italy. The model showed a good agreement with measurements and the successive application at the monthly time scale highlighted significant variations of the load due to the interplay between streamflow seasonality and variation of the anthropogenic pressure, chiefly due to the variability of 10 touristic fluxes. Since the data required by the model are widely available, our model is suitable to large-scale applications.

Abstract:In this short-review, the most common types of both pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCP, a class of "emerging pollutants") are considered, as well as some of the most frequent methods for their removal that envisage the use of nanomaterials. The nanomaterials used in conservative methods (namely, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration and adsorption) are basically nanoporous solids. Non-conservative methods, which include photocatalysis and Fenton reaction, are currently considered more promising than conservative ones, as the former allow the (at least) partial degradation of the original molecules into more biodegradable by-products, which can be further abated by subsequent biological treatments, whereas the former are not efficient for the removal of small quantities of pollutants and have to be regenerated.
