Pharmacokinetics of bromide in adult sheep following oral and intravenous administration

Abstract: When administered PO, bromide in sheep has a long half-life (t½ ) of approximately 14 days, with good bioavailability. Potassium bromide is a readily available, affordable salt with a long history of medical use as an anxiolytic, sedative and antiseizure therapy in other species. There are a number of husbandry activities and flock level neurological conditions, including perennial ryegrass toxicosis, in which bromide may have therapeutic or prophylactic application.

“…It has slow excretion rate due to a marked tubular reabsorption in the kidneys. Thus, the half-life sodium bromide after oral administration has been reported from days to weeks in different studies (7,8). The physiological role of bromide, unlike other halogens, was unknown until very recently (9).…”

“…The authors of a pharmacokinetic study in sheep conclude that as potassium bromide is cheap, easy to administer, has good bioavailability and a long half‐life, it has great potential for use to address animal welfare and production issues such as those associated with road and sea transport, shearing and inanition after stress …”

“…In addition, due to the availability of raw materials in the food industry, nitrite is commonly used as a poison [10], so effective qualitative and quantitative detection is helpful for the prosecution of criminal cases. Bromide has a long history of medicinal use as a tranquilizer, anxiolytic, and anti‐epileptic treatment and prevention drug [11]. However, bromide affects the absorption of iodide ions and can result in hypothyroidism [12].…”
