Pharmacologic Treatment of Vitiligo in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review

Abstract: The main outcome measurements were morphometric analysis performed using a computer program, hematologic or biochemical change, and photography (predominant). It is unclear which was the most effective treatment for vitiligo, however, it was found that these therapies are all promising in the treatment of the disease. With proper care, disease control and repigmentation, even if partial, can be achieved.

“…22 Systematic reviews and meta-analyses support a combination approach consisting of TCIs and phototherapy in the form of narrow-band ultraviolet B radiation 23,24 or 308-nm excimer laser therapy. 25,26 British guidelines suggest TCIs may be considered for adults and children with vitiligo as an alternative to TCS given their better short-term safety profile. 27 ii) Types of Dermatitis Other Than Atopic Dermatitis.…”

“…This dermatologic disorder is caused by abnormal melanocytes. The exact cause of vitiligo is still unclear, but studies have suggested a wide range of causes from autoimmunity to autocytotoxicity to viral and neural causes [43] , [50] . One vitiligo treatment is to expose the skin to UVB light to induce repigmentation [51] .…”

“…In a systematic review, the most commonly used drugs were tacrolimus alone (or combined with clobetasol), pimecrolimus, corticosteroids, and calcipotriol. 11 All these methods may have consequences in the short, medium or long run on the health of the patient. In addition to the fact that no therapy is planned, we have envisaged psychotherapy when the child will become aware of his unsightly lesions.…”
