Pharmacological Activities of Sulfated Fucose-Rich Polysaccharides after Oral Administration: Perspectives for the Development of New Carbohydrate-Based Drugs

Abstract: Marine organisms are a source of active biomolecules with immense therapeutic and nutraceutical potential. Sulfated fucose-rich polysaccharides are present in large quantities in these organisms with important pharmacological effects in several biological systems. These polysaccharides include sulfated fucan (as fucoidan) and fucosylated chondroitin sulfate. The development of these polysaccharides as new drugs involves several important steps, among them, demonstration of the effectiveness of these compounds … Show more

“…Multiple biological actions of fucoidans depend primarily on their interaction with different proteins due to the presence of sulfate groups [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ], but branching of molecules [ 20 ] and molecular weights [ 21 , 22 ] may also be very important factors. Fucoidans are traditionally regarded as promising anticoagulant [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ], antitumor [ 27 , 28 ] and anti-inflammatory agents [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ], but recently they acquired special importance as potential components of antiviral drugs [ 34 , 35 , 36 ], activators of hematopoiesis [ 37 , 38 ], and reagents for use in nanomedicine [ 39 ].…”

“…These examples demonstrate high structural diversity of FCSs. Since investigation of FCSs is connected with their promising biological activities [16][17][18][19], it is clear that different biological properties of FCS should depend on their fine structural characteristics, such as degree and position of sulfation, nature and position of branches and molecular mass distribution.…”

“…Natural fucose-enriched sulfated polysaccharides exerted excellent anticoagulant, antithrombotic, antivirus and anticancer activity together with many other biological actions [15][16][17][18][19]. Holothurian FCSs and FSs are isolated and characterized in order to find new biopolymers of practical importance and to establish distinct structure-activity correlations in these unique biologically active biopolymers.…”
