Pharmacological Potential of Hippophae rhamnoides L. Nano-Emulsion for Management of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in Animals’ Model: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Liaqat Hussain,
Saba Rana,
Ghulam Abbas
et al.

Abstract: The most common female endocrinopathy, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), generally affects women of childbearing age. Hippophae rhamnoides L. has been traditionally used to improve menstrual cyclicity. Gas chromatography by flame ionization detection analysis showed that it contained various phytoconstituents such as omega-3 fatty acid, phytosterols, palmitic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid. H. rhamnoides L. (HR) nano-emulsion was also formulated. HR and its … Show more

“…Specifically, nanoemulsions improve hormonal balance by increasing follicle‐stimulating hormone, estrogen, and progesterone levels while controlling luteinizing hormone surges and testosterone levels. Ovarian histopathology revealed the restoration of normal echotexture after treatment with nanoemulsions (Hussain et al., 2023).…”

“…Interestingly, the nanoemulsion formulation exhibited more statistically significant outcomes, potentially due to its superior bioavailability compared to free/bulk oil alone. The lipid profile analysis showed a remarkable improvement in HDL (high‐density lipoprotein) levels of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)‐induced rats administered with nanoemulsions and elevated total cholesterol, LDL (low‐density lipoprotein), and triglyceride levels decreased significantly compared to those treated with free HR oil alone (Hussain et al., 2023). Encapsulated fish oil in different microemulsions with acacia gum, chitosan, whey protein, and lipoid.…”

“…PCOS symptoms include hyperandrogenism, hirsutism, painful and irregular menstrual periods, amenorrhea, an increased number of ovarian cysts, and anovulation. Infertility is commonly caused by PCOS. , The disease prevalence ranges from 4 to 26% in different populations and regions of the world. ,, …”

“…Infertility is commonly caused by PCOS. 1,2 The disease prevalence ranges from 4 to 26% in different populations and regions of the world. 1,3,4 Pathologically, PCOS is due to the distorted intracellular signaling which can arise either from extra-or intraovarian factors stimulating the synthesis of androgen from theca cells (endocrine cells in ovaries).…”
