Pharmacological “Rescue” of the Corpus Luteum Results in Increased Inhibin Production

Abstract: Inhibin production by the corpus luteum was investigated by undertaking pharmacological rescue of the corpus luteum with hCG in four healthy women. Blood samples were collected daily for two menstrual cycles. Starting 7 days after the LH surge in the second cycle, incremental doses of hCG (125-8000 IU) were administered daily for 7 days resulting in hCG levels comparable to those seen in normal pregnancy. Following hCG, the luteal phase was prolonged and there were significant increases in the plasma concentra… Show more

“…Four women were administered i.m. injections of HCG (Profasi, Serono Laboratories, Welwyn Garden City, UK) from LH + 7 in daily doubling doses, starting at 125 IU and continuing for 6-8 days to reproduce the hormonal changes of early pregnancy (Illingworth et al, 1990). The tissue was fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde for 24 h. In all cases, morphological dating of the luteal phase endometrium was used to confirm the luteal-phase classification.…”

“…In addition, rescued corpora lutea were also collected as described previously (Illingworth et al 1990, Duncan et al 1996. Briefly, women (n ¼ 5) received daily injections of hCG (Profasi; Serono Laboratories, Welwyn Garden City, Herts, UK) from LH þ 7 in daily doubling doses, starting at 125 IU, for 5 -8 days until surgery.…”

“…For the remainder of the pregnancy, the placenta is the primary source of serum progesterone. The luteotropic effects of CG have been demonstrated experimentally in nonpregnant primates, including humans [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Treatment of nonpregnant women with hCG on midluteal days of the menstrual cycle, when implantation would normally occur, prolongs the life of the CL and can also increase progesterone secretion [6,7,[10][11][12][13].…”
