Phase 2a randomised controlled feasibility trial of a new ‘balanced binocular viewing’ treatment for unilateral amblyopia in children age 3–8 years: trial protocol

Abstract: IntroductionTreatments for amblyopia, the most common vision deficit in children, often have suboptimal results. Occlusion/atropine blurring are fraught with poor adherence, regression and recurrence. These interventions target only the amblyopic eye, failing to address imbalances of cortical input from the two eyes (‘suppression’). Dichoptic treatments manipulate binocular visual experience to rebalance input. Poor adherence in early trials of dichoptic therapies inspired our development of balanced binocular… Show more

“…Patching, on the other hand, has no effect on stereoacuity. These results are consistent with other small sample studies conducted with both children and adult patients [29,36]. An interesting observation is that stereoacuity improvement in adults reached a plateau after 23 h of treatment [36].…”

“…-Contrast rebalancing: The same image is presented in full contrast to the amblyopic eye and with significantly reduced contrast to the fellow eye [24,40]; -Visual blur: Presentation of identical images but with refractive blurring over the non-amblyopic eye [24,29,36]; -Partial presentation: Different elements of a visual scene are presented in each eye (as complementary parts of a puzzle), and the whole image can be perceived through binocular fusion [24].…”
