Phase Behaviour of New Side‐Chain Liquid Crystalline Polyoxetanes

Abstract: Summary: The synthesis and thermal behaviour of two new polyoxetanes with side chains having a dimer structure mesogen‐spacer‐mesogen and a long terminal alkyl group are reported. The two polymers differ in the chemical structure of the central spacer. The polyoxetanes have been obtained by cationic ring‐opening polymerisation of an appropriately substituted oxetane ring. Both polyoxetanes studied exhibit liquid crystalline properties showing a similar sequence of phases. DSC and synchrotron experiments indica… Show more

“…This pattern is rather similar to that reported in paraffins 25,26 and in some smectic liquid crystalline polymers. 27 A quite analogous structure has been previously found in EVOH copolymers after stretching 28,29 identified as a strain-induce phase. In these copolymers with majority in vinyl alcohol comonomer, the deformation process takes place through necking formation up to temperatures well above their glass transition 30 and this straininduced phase change was observed if the initial undrawn specimen exhibited either a monoclinic or orthorhombic lattice.…”

“…Quantitative and fast initiation leads to polymers of controlled molecular weight and polydispersity, as well as allows for efficient synthesis of block copolymers. Such processes were widely studied in the past for syntheses of SCLCP [ 36 ] and are still of some interest [ 37 , 38 ], mainly in synthesis of SCLC poly(oxetanes).…”

“…All the polymers exhibited expected SmC* as well as SmA phase, while two of them generated also tilted smectic phase, of unknown molecular organization, in very wide range of temperature (for example T g -0.3 SmC* 123 SmA 137 I, T g 19 SmC* 190 SmA 227 I). They are good film forming materials, which makes them excellent candidates for ferroelectric applications [ 37 ].…”
