Phase behaviour of polyoxyethylene surfactants with water. Mesophase structures and partial miscibility (cloud points)

Abstract: From a review of the major factors responsible for surfactant mesophase structure, a model phase diagram is deduced which shows phase structure as a function of surfactant volume fraction and micelle curvature. To test this model the phase behaviour of a series of pure polyoxyethylene surfactants (C, EO,) with water has been studied using optical microscopy over the temperature range 0-100 OC. The compounds

“…We have been particularly interested in the phase behaviour of the non-ionic surfactant C 12 E 5 (C 12 H 25 (OCH 2 CH 2 ) 5 OH) in the presence of water and an alkane. Mixtures of C 12 E 5 and water can exhibit micellar, lamellar, hexagonal and cubic phases [1]. In the presence of oil, the three component system of C 12 E 5 /alkane/water shows a variety of single-phase and two-phase regions [2].…”

“…Quando em concentrações superiores à CMC, as micelas intumescem e se agregam para formar mesofases ordenadas ou cristais líquidos liotrópicos. 2 A mesofase a ser formada depende de parâmetros físico-químicos, como concentração e temperatura, assim como da estrutura química das moléculas de tensoativo que determinará a forma como estas se agregarão e como elas interagirão com a água.…”

“…Polyoxyethylene surfactants are widely used as emulsifying agents and detergents, and their aqueous phase behavior and self-organization have been extensively investigated (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). With increasing the polyoxyethylene chain length, the surfactant layer curvature of self-assemblies in water changes from negative to positive.…”
