Phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging in evaluation of hydrocephalus in pediatric patients

Abstract: Background Hydrocephalus is an increase in cerebrospinal fluid volume leading to cerebral ventricular enlargement (ventriculomegaly). Phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging is a sensitive technique to cerebrospinal fluid flow allowing noninvasive quantitative and qualitative evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid flow. Aim The purpose of our study was to assess the role of cerebrospinal fluid flowmetry using phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging … Show more

“…72 Specifically, T1WI and T2WI are used routinely to demonstrate alterations in the brain parenchyma, the size and shape of ventricles. 73 Heavily T2-weighted images and phase-contrast cine MRI are informative for determining sites of obstruction, 72,74 which is necessary for preoperative assessment. Phase-contrast MRI has also been used for differential diagnosis of different types of hydrocephalus in children.…”

“…Phase-contrast MRI has also been used for differential diagnosis of different types of hydrocephalus in children. 74 Additionally, the time spatial spin labeling inversion pulse method provides another technique for monitoring CSF flow dynamics in hydrocephalus. 75 Besides the above aspects that focus on CSF pathways, several other imaging techniques have also been used in assessing the effects of hydrocephalus on parenchyma structures, functions, and their interactions with brain development, such as DTI for white matter alterations, 76 ASL for cerebral perfusion.…”
