Phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of the Cu2O-CaO-Na2O system in equilibrium with copper

Abstract: The liquidus surfaces of the Cu 2 O-CaO, Cu 2 O-Na 2 O, and Cu 2 O-CaO-Na 2 O phase diagrams in equilibrium with metallic Cu were measured by thermal analysis at compositions varying from approximately 0 to 35 wt pct Na 2 O and 0 to 15 wt pct CaO. Solubilities in the solid binary terminal solutions were also measured by wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometer analysis. Copper oxide activities in binary liquid slags were determined from the measured oxygen content of the metallic copper equilibrated with the s… Show more

“…A ternary phase diagram equilibrated with molten copper was calculated from model parameters 5 for the slag system ( Figure 4). The equilibrium oxygen concentration in liquid copper was also measured by Coursol et al 5 for the CaO-Cu 2 O and Na 2 O-Cu 2 O binary systems. During this study, the oxygen level in blister copper equilibrated with Na 2 O-CaO-Cu 2 O slags was calculated at 1,150°C ( Figure 5).…”

“…A relation also exists between the molar ratio of oxygen in molten copper and the partial pressure of oxygen. 5 The activity of CuO 1/2 in the molten oxide is expressed by the product of its activity coeffi cient and the molar ratio in the oxide phase as shown in Equation C. The activity coeffi cient γCuO 1/2 varies with composition of the oxide phase.…”
