Phase equilibria study and thermodynamic description of the BaO‐CaO‐Al2O3 system

Abstract: A combined experimental investigation and thermodynamic assessment was performed for the BaO‐CaO‐Al2O3 system. By using a high‐temperature equilibration/quenching technique and scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, and X‐ray powder diffraction analysis, the phase equilibria at 1500°C and phase stability of BaCa2Al8O15 phase were determined. An extensive literature survey was conducted for the experimental and thermodynamic modeling data of the BaO‐CaO‐Al2O3 system. According to the litera… Show more

“…4, indicate the presence of only CaAl2O4 and BaAl2O4. Thus, the results of our experimental studies on the existence of the ternary compound BaCaAl4O8 are in good agreement with our thermodynamic calculations and those of other authors [16,21] and prove the impossibility of its formation in the CaO-BaO-Al2O3 system, both from the melt and by solidphase synthesis. In our opinion, the formation of the BaCaAl4O8 compound in the aluminumbarium slag in [15] can be explained by its special composition (the presence of a small amount of SiO2, MgO, and F).…”

“…In addition, the form of calcium aluminate can be changed by various cations, such as Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , Fe 3+ , and Si 4+ [40][41][42]. For example, the substitution of Ca 2+ with Sr 2+ or Ba 2+ [43,44]. Hence, ion doping can change the hydration properties while causing structural modifications of cementitious materials.…”

“…The compound 12CaO . 7Al 2 O 3 (C12A7, Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 ) is formed near the eutectic composition in the CaO-Al 2 O 3 system in the temperature range between ~850 °C and the melting point of ~1410 °C [1] (Fig. 1).…”

“…The compound 12CaO·7Al 2 O 3 (C12A7, Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 ) is formed near the eutectic composition in the CaO–Al 2 O 3 system in the temperature range between ~850°C and the melting point of ~1410°C 1 (Figure 1). This rather rare circumstance makes it possible to synthesize this composition via the melt as a glass or glass frit.…”
