Phase memory across two single-photon interferometers including wavelength conversion

Abstract: Spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) in a nonlinear crystal generates two single photons (signal and idler) with random phases, each. Thus, no 1 st -order interference between them occurs. However, coherence can be induced in a cascaded setup of two crystals, if e.g. the idler modes of both crystals are aligned to be indistinguishable. Due to the effect of phase memory it is found that the first order interference of the signal beams can be controlled by the phase delay between the pump beams. And eve… Show more

“…The term a † i1 a i1 accounts for the stimulated generation of the signal fields from the two crystals. If there is no applied idler field incident on BBO1, a † i1 a i1 = 0 and R then gives the interference pattern due to induced coherence [3,5,7]. Equation (7), based on the assumption of coherent applied fields, predicts a fringe visibility of unity, consistent with the nearly perfect visibility observed (Fig.…”

“…As a consequence of phase memory [7] we obtained very high visibility for both the signal and idler single-photon fields emitted from one of the two crystals, implying low whichpath knowledge. In this stimulated coherence experiment complementarity is realized up to the theoretical limit specified by K 2 + V 2 ≤ 1.…”

“…where s1, 2 and i1, 2 indicate spatial modes of down-converted photons generated at first (1) and second (2) passes through the crystal with frequencies s w and , i w p j is the phase acquired by the pump [24][25][26]. Here we assume that the frequency mode spacing is small and substitute the summation over frequency modes by the integration [5,10,27].…”
