Phenanthrenequinone–polymethylmethacrylate composite for polarization phase recording

Abstract: We present the results of an experimental study of photoanisotropy in polymethylmethacrylate layers containing phenanthrenequinone. We consider the characteristic features of inducing birefringence for different contents of the photosensitive molecules and temperatures of the layer. We propose a mechanism for appearance of photoinduced birefringence; we explain the concentration and temperature dependences of its magnitude based on the dimerization of phenanthrenequinone, established from the IR spectra. We ha… Show more

“…Photo-induced birefringence in PQ/PMMA film was first observed in 1999 [10]. In 2009, A. V. Trofimova et al studied photo-anisotropy in PQ/ PMMA [11]. They introduced mechanism of photo-induced birefringence.…”

“…In our previous study, a signal and a reference beam were separated in polarization basis and phase retardation pattern between the signal and the reference beams were recorded on a recording medium. The recording medium is made of a polarization-sensitive material such as azobenzene-containing material [4], photo-crosslinkable polymer [5] and axis-selective photo-reactive molecule doped polymer [6]. That recording technique was named "Retardagraphy" [7][8][9].…”

“…The mechanism for hologram formation in a PQ/ PMMA photopolymer is mainly attributed to the refractive index differences between the photoproduct and the polymer matrix. According to chemical experiments, the structural rearrangements induced by the photochemical reaction of PQ molecules are mainly attributed to the photoinduced birefringence in the PQ/PMMA [18]. As shown in Fig.…”

“…Moreover, the analysis of the dynamic process of holographic exposure in the AuNPs-PQ/ PMMA shows that the reaction concentration of PQ molecules is also increased with the doped gold NPs [19]. As a result of the increased absorption and more effective photoconversion of single PQ molecules, the doping gold NPs are expected to enhance the photoinduced birefringence in the AuNPs-PQ/PMMA, which is crucial for the performance of polarization holographic recording [16,18].…”
