Phenolic Compounds as Antioxidants: Carbonic Anhydrase Isoenzymes Inhibitors

Abstract: Antioxidant compounds can scavenge free radicals and increase shelf life by retarding the process of lipid peroxidation, which is one of the major reasons for deterioration of food, medicine and pharmaceutical products during processing and storage. An antioxidant molecule has been defined as any substance when found in low concentrations compared to that of an oxidizable substrate significantly delays or inhibits the oxidation. The major antioxidant compounds are especially phenolics and flavonoids, which are… Show more

“…have received a lot of attention world-wide as an alternative source of therapeutic agents against various oxidative stress related diseases. 8 It is the need of the hour that the natural sources of drugs and pharmaceutical products from the medicinal plants should be identified, isolated and characterized for their medicinal properties as many populations around the world are still using traditional system of medicines. 9 Cichorium intybus a perennial plant belongs to the Asteraceae family and the Cichorium genus comprises six species which are mainly distributed and used in traditional system of medicine throughout Asia and Europe.…”

“…Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known as reactive oxygen derivatives occurred from free radicals such as superoxide anion radicals (O À 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals (OH ) [3][4][5][6] . ROS assault to membrane lipids and this event results in lipid peroxidation [7][8][9][10] . Also, they can affect the cellular proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and other potential susceptible substances.…”

“…All of these damage are resulted from over-accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, anti-oxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and other free radical scavengers are demanded for protecting testis from free radical damage to maintain its normal function [8][9][10]. NF-E2-related factor (Nrf2) is a redox-sensitive transcription factor.…”
