Phenolic Profile and Comparison of the Antioxidant, Anti-Ageing, Anti-Inflammatory, and Protective Activities of Borago officinalis Extracts on Skin Cells

Abstract: In this study, methanol and water–methanol extracts of borage (Borago officinalis) herb dried using various methods were analysed for their phenolic profile and biological activity. Twelve compounds, including flavonoids (astragalin, kaempferol 4-glucoside, rutoside, and vitexin) and phenolic acids (caffeic, chlorogenic, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic, ferulic, p-hydroxybenzoic, protocatechuic, rosmarinic, and syringic), were determined qualitatively and quantitatively in B. officinalis extracts by the HPLC-DAD met… Show more

“…To determine the ability of the C. mas L. extracts and hydrogels to inhibit the intracellular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in skin cells, the method by Michalak et al [66] was used. In this method, the fluorogenic dye 2 ,7 -dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H 2 DCFDA; Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA) was used.…”

“…To further evaluate the in vitro biological activity of the GS and GF, we used two human cell lines, HaCaT (keratinocytes) and BJ (fibroblasts), which are commonly used to evaluate the effects of antioxidant compounds on skin [ 55 , 56 ]. Specifically, we conducted cell viability assays to determine the effect of the GS and GF on the growth of HaCaT and BJ cells.…”

“…Polyphenol levels of leaves and flower water extracts of B. officinalis L. (on average 30.1 and 18.7 mg GA eq/gDW, respectively) were seven-fold higher than those obtained by Karimi et al [ 36 ] on leaves of the same species. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of S. nigra L. have been related to the presence of anthocyanins, phenolic acids and flavonoids (such as gallic acid, rutin and quercetin) [ 35 , 37 ], while in B. officinalis L. to syringic and rosmarinic acids, myricetin, rutin and kaempferol [ 38 , 39 ].…”
