Phenolic profiles and brine shrimp cytotoxicity of the ethanolic extract from the aerial part of Crocus alatavicus L.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the phenolic profiles and evaluate the brine shrimp cytotoxic activity of the ethanolic extract from the aerial part of C. alatavicus, an endemic species of Kazakhstan flora. Nine phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in the extract by high-performance liquid chromatography method. Preliminary cytotoxicity of the extract was determined by the brine shrimp (Artemiasalina) assay. The results reveal that the ethanolic extract from the aerial part of Crocus alata… Show more

“…Polyphenols, including flavonoids, are widely distributed plant secondary metabolites with well-documented biological activity, mainly antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anticancer properties [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. The total polyphenol content in the CA extract in the present study was 64.84 ± 0.88 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/g (data not shown) and was comparable to the data presented by Satybaldiyeva et al [ 8 ].…”

“…As reported elsewhere [ 8 ], the ethanolic extract from the aerial part of C. alatavicus growing in Kazakhstan was suggested to possess the potential anticancer activity based on data from the brine shrimp assay. In this paper, significant cytotoxic activity of the extract against the LNCaP cell line was found with an IC 50 value of 1.95 mg/mL.…”
