Phenolic Profiling of the South American “Baylahuen” Tea (Haplopappus spp., Asteraceae) by HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS

Abstract: Abstract:The aerial parts of several Haplopappus species (Asteraceae), known under the common name "baylahuen", are used as herbal teas in Chile and Argentina. In Chile, "baylahuen" comprises H. multifolius, H. taeda, H. baylahuen and H. rigidus. Little is known about the chemical identity of the infusion constituents in spite of widespread consumption. The aim of the present work was the characterization of phenolics occurring in the infusions and methanol extracts of "baylahuen" by HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS. A simpl… Show more

“…Quinic acids and their derivatives are one kind of the most characteristic components in Asteraceae family plants [19,20,21]. There are four hydroxyl groups substituted at 1-, 3-, 4-, and 5-position, as well as one carboxyl at 1-position of quinic acid, respectively, which means that the quinic acids derivatives can be formed at any one of above mentioned position or functional group theoretically.…”

“…In the crystal the molecules are linked by one intermolecular OH⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bond forming 1D-dimensional chain with graph-set notation (15) 23 (O2H2⋅⋅⋅O4 i 149°; O2⋅⋅⋅O4 i 2.797(9) Å; H2⋅⋅⋅O4 i 2.06 Å (symmetry code (i) x,-1+y,1+z), (Figure 4). The absolute configuration of the title compound which has been determined from the refinement of the Flack parameter 19 , x = 0.0 (5), which indicate that the correct configuration had been assigned against 1353 (99%) CuKα Bijvoet pairs. On this basis the absolute configuration was assigned as C5R, C8S, C9R and C10S.…”

“…All the related Chilean Haplopappus "baylahuen" species produce a resinous exudate with interesting biologically active compounds including, several clerodane and labdane diterpenoids and flavonoids with biological significance 2 . Indeed, the Mapuche medicinal plants Haplopappus multifolius, H. taeda, H. baylahuen and remyanus showed the presence of flavonoids and labdane terpenoids with known antioxidant, choleretic, anti-inflammatory and cholagogue properties 3,4,5 . In the Aymara region, the infusion of H. rigidus has been used to cure or prevent liver diseases, gastro-intestinal disorders, cough and has also been employed as a sexual stimulant attributed to the presence of diterpenoids and flavonoids 1,6,7 .…”

“…As no chromatographic separation was performed in the HPLC, the chemical profile of the fractions rich in acidic compounds (8 th e 9 th ) was achieved by direct infusion in the ESI-MS (Shimadzu ® LCMS-2020, Kyoto, Japan) set to negative mode. The identities of the main peaks in the phenolic fraction were suggested based on information reported in references (Gill & Morgan 2001;Bastos et al 2007;Sang et al 2007;Falcão et al 2010;Navarre et al 2011;Hamed et al 2014;Spindola et al 2014;Schmeda-Hirschmann et al 2015;El Sayed et al 2016).…”
