Phenological observations on Syrah red wine variety clones

Abstract: Vine undergoes seasonal changes repeated annually in a certain sequence. In the spring time, the shoots’ development and inflorescences begin, flowering occurs, and in the summer the berry size increases, after the grapes and shoots ripen. This period of active life is called the growing season. The main phenological stages duration: bud burst, first leaf appearance, first inflorescens appearance, flowering, bunch clossure and technological maturity (veraison) differ for each variety (clone). The length of th… Show more

“…Thus, by the end of May, the shoots had an increase of 130 -150 cm. During flowering, when the optimal temperature reaches 28-30ºС (Popova, 2023), the most intensive growth is observed, and on average for the period of one week, we have an increase around and above 40 cm. In the case of the non-reduced variants (V1, V2, V3, and V4), from the end of June to the middle of July, a smooth growth stoppage began (Figure 2).…”

“…The shoot grows in length mainly due to the intercalary growth of the upper 6-8 internodes. The growth strength of the shoots depends on the biological characteristics of the variety (clone), as well as on the substrate on which the vines are grafted (Popova, 2023).…”

“…During the study period, an average monthly air temperature of 14ºС was measured, the active temperature sum was 2067ºС, and the amount of precipitation was 633.40mm (Popova, 2023). The summer periods were characterized by prolonged droughts combined with low atmospheric humidity.…”
