Phenomenon Development from Practice to Research

Abstract: One of the most prudent and efficient ways of conquering the task of developing new knowledge, is the utilization of practice to find phenomena. The purpose of this column is to present the construction of a phenomenon to be utilized for future study and explication utilizing this format. New nursing knowledge was developed by constructing a practice situation, identifying a phenomenon of interest, grounding the phenomenon in the focus of the discipline, and defining concepts related to the phenomenon. Through… Show more

“…Almost half (45.4%) of the dissertations studied theories from fields other than nursing, 27.1% of the researchers studied nursing theories, and 27.5% of the dissertation studies were engaged in theory generation (Spear, ). It is of great importance to use nursing theories and models in studies yielding strong evidence so that nursing theories and models can be improved (Pate, ). Therefore, what nurse researchers using models and theories in their studies think about the issue, what facilitators they had, and what barriers they encountered should be revealed.…”

“…True, Pate connected it to caring in the human health experience which is the focus of the discipline, not a grand theory (Newman, Sime, & CorcoranPerry, 1991). Pate (2011) identified the participant as feeling empty. She focused on decision-making which may be difficult to generalize to a particular population as Pate suggested.…”

“…Nursing theories form the basis for professional nursing practice. As evidence-based practice in nursing science is enhanced, theories need to be developed (Pate, 2011). These theories are developed through empiric knowledge generation.…”
